Collection: Fresh Work | Week Two

Matt Zimdars’ WCCO series explores weather systems in the Midwest and the station whose reports he followed diligently for years. With a special interest in severe weather, Zimdars’s patchwork drawings and paintings combine text from the weather channel with drawings of satellite images.

Katie Bretzman describes her quilt-like drawings as aerial views of living spaces and scenes from home. To make her drawings, she repeats a series of vertical hatch marks, using a rotation of the same markers throughout a piece.

Kenneth Bowling’s work is inspired by his time on the road with his father running semi trucks. Material exploration drives his sculptural works, which have included metal, cardboard, felting materials, and ceramics.

Katie Brinkman is influenced by the concept art of animated films such as Disney’s One Hundred and One Dalmations (1961) and Pinocchio (1940). Movement is paramount in Katie’s drawings. “I want to make my work come alive,” she says.

David Wright’s technicolor cityscapes are inspired by travel and a desire to see more of the world. His process begins with research, whether through firsthand experiences, books, or images. “After I study a place for a while, I sketch out the buildings that make up the location,” he says.

Devin Wildes’s paintings respond to photographs sent to him from friends and family. In large swaths of bright, flat color, and delicate details, they convey rural and urban scenes in both the U.S. and abroad.
