Working primarily in acrylic, Virginia Townsend’s paintings range from landscapes of rivers and flower fields to vibrant abstraction rooted in nature. In both approaches she combines flat color with layers of texture. Virginia describes her practice as climbing and descending levels of abstraction, landscapes being more grounded and then ascending an abstract scale, holding on to the theme of nature. She says, “ At the very top are fully abstract pieces, void of any earthly representation, yet full of pathways, woven layers of colorful surprises.”
Townsend has presented work in recent Interact group exhibitions, including We Are Not Disposable (2020), Groundswell at Artspace Jackson Flats (2019), and Saint Paul Art Crawl (2019).
